Is this an Ant or a Termite?

Does this ant have wings or is it a termite? Good question! Not easy to answer. Ant or Termite? Does an ant have the same-sized wings? Does a termite have three body segments? It can be as simple as knowing those answers to be able to identify what you have swarming around your house. Most importantly, here is your crash course in identifying what is flying around your home.

How to identify an ant

  • Firstly an ant has a narrow waist.
  • Eats sugar and proteins, therefore like to be inside.
  • Additionally, Has Segmented elbowed antennae.
  • Are sometimes visible in your home.
  • Has large forewings and small hind wings.
  • Are attracted to wood, moisture, and sweets.
  • Finally, Flying ants will swarm in late spring and early summer. In addition, they prefer to have bright sunlight, low winds, high humidity, and warm temperatures. They prefer to swarm after there have been 3 to 5 days of rain. July – August.

How to identify a termite

  • Has a broad waist, in other words, fatter than the average ant.
  • Visible when they are swarming!
  • Has two sets of wings uniform in size.
  • Eats the cellulose inside of wood.
  • Significantly, Has straight bead-like antennae.
  • Are attracted to wood and moisture.
  • Most subterranean termites swarm in the spring and summer months! Typically on a warm day with calm winds after a rainfall.
  • Finally, Drywood termites typically swarm during the late summer or fall months, therefore now is the time to inspect!
