First, lets start by explaining how a light bulb change may help. Now, I know a majority of homeowners or even commercial buildings have regular light bulb either by the door around the building (if commercial). The traditional light bulbs attract hundreds of insects straight to your door. The problem with that? Every time you walk in and out of your house those bugs are welcoming themselves right on in with you. Secondly, not only do the lights attract the insect but also the predators of insects such as lizards, frogs etc. Sounds like a party to me!
Why Insects are Attracted to Light
So, why does light attract bugs? Most insects are positively phototactic meaning; attracted to light. First theory is they use moon light to navigate. Therefore, when bugs see artificial light they get confused thinking it’s the moon. Second theory is, insects use light for an emergency escape route. If there was a threat on the ground they fly toward the moon knowing it is too high for a predator to reach them.
Bug Lights; How They Can Make a Difference
How does a bug light make a difference in your home? Most commonly, the UV light and White light attract bugs because the light resembles the moon. Further, the bug light is a yellow bulb that could be CFL or Incandescent with a warm color temperature. Because this yellow light is on the warm side on the color spectrum, insects have trouble detecting the light. Second, some insects may be able to see the light however, they likely won’t get stuck going in circles. Now, there still might be insects around the light but it will be much fewer. For extra measure you can make the light around your business or front door motion censored. Therefore, making it less attractive and less of a hang out spot.
