It’s Almost Swarming Season

It’s Almost Swarming Season. YAY! No seriously, this is a big YAY! Swarming season is a good thing! Termites are notorious for going undetected to that average person, most times for years! And normally by the time they are found, the damage has already been done. This is a time in which termites are easily noticed, if you know what you’re looking for. Being that prevention is key with these little wood-destroying ant-like bugs, it’s good to know what to look for during this time. Remember, Termite cause more damage than hurricanes do on a yearly basis.

The Swarming Facts

  • Termite swarmers are mature reproductive aged male and female termites that leave their current colony in search of a new home.
  • Swarming season is April to July, and is the only time they are out of the ground or wood.
  • Termite swarmers are brown or black, depending on the species.
  • They are only around 3/8 of an inch in length, so they should never be confused with carpenter ant swarmers, which can be as long as an inch.
  • Termite swarmers also have long white wings with rounded tips to help us easily distinguish them from other insects.
  • They are attracted to moist areas. Pay close attention to shaded areas, leaks on spigot/hoses, issues with gutters.
  • They are in search of food sources. Keep your yard free of any wood, this includes dead trees and mulch.
