Termite Swarm or Ant Swarm

Termite Swarm or Ant Swarm- That is the question! Seems like an easy question to answer, but unfortunately, for most it’s not. Ant or Termite? Does an ant have same sized wings? Does a termite have three body segments? It can be as simple as knowing those answers to be able to identify what you have swarming around your house. Here is your crash course in identifying what is flying around your home.

Termites

  • Are not usually visible unless they are swarming.
  • Has two sets of wings uniform in size.
  • Eats the cellulose inside of wood.
  • Has straight bead like antennae.
  • Are attracted to wood and moisture.
  • Most species of subterranean termites swarm during the spring and summer months, typically on a warm day with calm winds after a rainfall.
  • Drywood termites and one particular species of subterranean termite (R. hageni) typically swarm during the late summer or fall months, from August through November.

Ants

  • Eats sugar and proteins.
  • Has Segmented elbowed antennae.
  • Are sometime visible ion you home.
