As a kid Tom and Jerry was on everyone’s television. Because the cat and mouse game never grew old. So, now as adults, the same game applies its just the pest control company and mouse game, with a lot less mallets pulled out of thin air. The new adult version also includes not just mice, but rats too. So what’s the difference between mice and rats? And is the cat and mouse game worth getting worked up about? Lets face it, no one wants to see a mouse run across their floor so lets talk about it.
Mouse
Both
Rat
Can produce 40-100 droppings per day
Can produce 20-50 droppings per day
Both nocturnal, timid and territorial in nature
Long, thin, hairy tails
Hairless, scaly, long tails
White, gray or brown in color
Small in length and height. Weighs 12-20 cm
Large in length and height. Weighs 40+ cm
Floppy ears
Triangular snouts with long whiskers
More blunt snout than a mouse’s
While they have some similarities, majority of there physical traits are different. The rat will be almost double the size and will leave behind grease marks on pretty much any surface it touches. Mice tho will push the bounds way more than rats because they get curious.
Damage
Even tho these guys are small, they can wreck major havoc on your home. But While rats can squeeze through holes the size of a half dollar, mice can fit through holes the size of a nickel. If stored correctly, mice will have a hard time getting into anything in your kitchen. There teeth are too weak. But rats can tear through metal, plastic, wooden beams and sometimes even softer concrete.
How do we solve it
If you dont want to play the cat and mouse game then the real question is what can you do to prevent it? Because if you have an infestation, you need to know how to fix it.
Keeping your kitchen and home clean and clutter free really is key in making sure an infestation doesn’t go out of control. And if it does, please do not feel singled out. Because mice and rats invade an estimated 21 million homes in the United States each Winter. In the event of a infestation do not wait until it goes out of control. These guys bring in health concerns, and the sooner you get a pest service out there the better.
