Ants; The Celebrity In The Pest World

Oh Ants, the famous ants. By now almost every homeowner has known the pain of seeing a nice army of ants marching right on through your home like its their home too. Even though they are tiny, boy are they a huge nuisance! Some of the most common home invading ants are Argentine and Ghost Ants. So what makes them so attracted to our home?

Argentine Ants

These little guys are often referred to as Sugar Ants in Florida. Secondly, they are super small about 2.2 to 2.8mm and tend to be light brown. Also, Argentine Ants like to nest in moist soil which includes, under wood boards, along building and sidewalks. You can usually identify them by their well defined slow moving trails. Unfortunately, they do have quite the sweet tooth! They love sweet drinks, cakes or sweet breads, pet food etc.

Argentine Ants

The best way to keep them out is to seal cracks and crevasses on the exterior of your home/building. Secondly, the next important thing is to make sure your don’t have any trees or bushes against your house. This will leave them a direct highway into your home. Third, make sure the plants you do have around your home dont have aphids as the Argentine ants love the honeydew residue aphids leave behind. Last they love moisture, try to keep decaying matter out of your yard as they love moisture and thrive there.

Ghost Ants

As you can probably tell from the name, Ghost ants are very hard to see because of their color and small size. These little guys are another culprit to invade your home/ place of business, especially in the kitchen. They have a sweet tooth just like the Argentine ants. Therefore, they will most likely invade anything in your cupboard they can eat.

Ghost Ants

Indoors Ghost ants usually nest behind baseboards, between cabinets, in wall voids and inside potted plants. Typically you may find them where moisture is higher. Such as, showers, sinks, and again potted plants. Similarly to the Argentine Ants, they will trail along trees and climb onto your home from shrubs that have direct contact with the structure. To prevent, it is best to make sure you dont have any trees or shrubbery against your home. Along with making sure debris and leaf little is removed.

Conclusion

These are only just two types of ants that are common invaders of your home. While sometimes it’s difficult to prevent them from coming inside, the best thing you can do is to make sure you don’t leave food or crumbs on the counter or floor and make sure you don’t have any leaks. Also, making sure that the outside of your home is well kept. On top of this, it is best to also have a pest control company as they can do maintenance sprays on the exterior of your home and they have the trained eye to notice and signs of infestation.
