3 Signs You Might Have Termites in Your Home

As a homeowner, it’s important to realize and identify the early warning signs of termites. Certainly termites have become a colossal issue faced by homeowners nationwide. Additionally, for Floridians, they are an issue year-round. Each year, termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage, according to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA).

Termites nesting in your home can cause insurmountable damage, as well as cost you thousands of dollars in damage. Typically, this type of damage is not covered by homeowners insurance. With this in mind, recognizing a termite issue before it gets out of hand is paramount in order to save your home and your wallet.

Here are 3 signs you might have termites in your Sanford home…

Damaged Wood

Damaged wood is the most common indicator of termites in your home. Bare, rotted, or exposed wood is extremely attractive to termites. Termites generally feed on wood from the inside out, leaving a distinct pattern on the wood. Consequently, if wood feels weak or sounds hollow, termites might be to blame. Furthermore, this could lead to structural damage in your home, and potentially cost you thousands in repairs.

Discarded Wings

If you notice piles of discarded wings in or around your home, it’s highly likely that you have active termites. As termite swarmers leave their colonies to find mates, they shed their wings. These wings are pale-colored and approximately 1/4″ to 1/2″ long. Because termites are drawn to light, you will notice discarded wings near window seals, doorways, or in cobwebs.

Termite Droppings

Termite droppings, or “frass”, typically appear wood-colored and pellet-shaped. Which often resemble sawdust or wood shavings. As drywood termites eat through the wood they are nesting in, the wood becomes digested and turns into droppings. As a result, the termites will push the frass out of small holes near the entrance of the nest to avoid buildup. If you’re able to locate termite frass, the entry point is very close by.
