Is There a Fungus Among Us?

Is there a fungus among us? Possibly. With summer quickly coming to an end, it is important to be on the lookout for changes in your lawn. Especially, with the changes in weather that we will be experiencing in the next several months. That being said, brown patch fungus is a familiar culprit associated with weather change, particularly with St. Augustine grass. If you live in an area such as Heathrow, and have a H.O.A., do not fret! We can help to keep them off your back! Here are a few tips that you can refer to in effort to preserve your lawn, and keep it looking healthy, even during the brown patch fungus season.

Tips To Avoid Brown Patch Fungus

  • Important: Although, it is critically important for your lawn to be getting enough water during the scorching summer days, it is equally important to not be over watering once the temps begin to drop. Brown patch fungus typically shows up when a lawn is too wet. Your lawn does not need as much water when the temperatures drop below 70 degrees at night time. It is very important to keep your lawn dry during those cooler evenings.
  • Watch out for initial signs of brown patch fungus such as small yellow areas that turn brown, ring shaped patches with healthier grass in the center, and/or areas with a dark gray or brown ring around the edges.
  • Poor drainage, lack of air movement, excessive thatch, and compacted soils are also main contributing causes of brown patch fungus. Make sure to pay close attention to these details when examining your lawn.
  • Rake up those leaves! Without proper sunlight, leaves can act as a catalyst for all types of patches and fungus that can be detrimental to any lawn. Conditions like this will promote more weeds as well – yuck!
